    What to know

    • WJEC GCSE 3750 Unit 1 Section A asks for a comparative analytical essay linking one poem from the Unit 1 anthology with an unseen poem. The anthology poem depends on the course route and year; the unfamiliar poem must be read from its own details, not treated as if it shares the studied poem’s context.

What to do in an assessment

    • Choose a comparison point that genuinely fits both poems, then explain how each writer develops it through voice, imagery, structure or form. Support each half with precise evidence, and name a meaningful difference as well as a similarity. Keep the comparison focused rather than writing two unrelated mini-essays.

    In plain language

Compare how the poems create meaning, not just what they are about. One can share a concern with the other while presenting it very differently.

    Self-check

What is the key difference between a studied poem and an unseen poem in this task?

    Show the answer

You bring prior knowledge to the anthology poem, but must build your reading of the unseen poem from the text in front of you.
