    What to know

    • Induction proves a statement over successive integers by checking a base case and proving that truth at k implies truth at k+1. The induction hypothesis applies only to the chosen k, not automatically to every integer.

What to do in an assessment

    • Write the base case, state the hypothesis, add the next term to the assumed sum, simplify to the claimed expression with k+1, and state the conclusion for all integers in the specified range.

    In plain language

For 1+2+…+n=n(n+1)/2, the base case n=1 is true. Assume the sum to k is k(k+1)/2. Then the next sum is k(k+1)/2+(k+1)=(k+1)(k+2)/2. This is exactly the same formula with k+1 in place of k, so the step is complete. The proof works for the whole sequence, unlike checking only a few sums.

    Self-check

What value does 1+2+…+10 have according to the formula?

    Show the answer

    10×11/2 = 55.
