    What to know

    • WJEC GCE English Language includes Language over Time in A2 Unit 3. Historical change may be visible in spelling, vocabulary, grammar or meaning, but a difference between periods does not by itself prove that one form is more logical, correct or expressive than another.

What to do in an assessment

    • Identify a specific contrast between the texts or language samples, date and contextualise the evidence carefully, then explain a plausible linguistic process. Distinguish an observed pattern from a proposed cause. Use terminology accurately, and avoid drawing a broad conclusion from a single example.

    In plain language

Languages change because people use them in changing communities. Describe the evidence first; don’t call an older or newer form better just because it differs.

    Self-check

What must a claim about language change be based on?

    Show the answer

Specific evidence from the language samples, interpreted in context rather than assumed from a general story of progress.
