    What to know

    • WJEC GCE English Language and Literature AS Unit 1 asks for a comparative analysis of one poem from the Pre-1914 Poetry Anthology and one unseen text; one unseen choice is spoken. The two texts may differ in mode, so establish what each text is doing before deciding how they connect.

What to do in an assessment

    • Choose a point that genuinely links the texts, then analyse how each writer’s language and form shape that idea. For the spoken option, consider features of speech and context as well as lexical choices. Support the comparison from both texts and explain a difference rather than forcing a false similarity.

    In plain language

Compare the texts through the evidence they give you. If one is spoken and the other a poem, the difference in form can be part of the comparison.

    Self-check

Why should a comparison not force two texts to be identical?

    Show the answer

A useful comparison explains a meaningful connection and a significant difference, each supported by details from both texts.
