What to know
- Close analysis connects a deliberate choice in language, form or structure to an effect and a possible meaning. Naming a metaphor, contrast, sentence shift or stage direction is only the start; explain what it makes the reader notice and how it serves the larger passage or work.
What to do in an assessment
- Choose a short, relevant detail; identify the choice accurately; explain its immediate effect; then connect it to the writer’s wider presentation. Use a literary term only when it sharpens the explanation. Avoid a feature-spotting list or a claim about what every reader must feel.
In plain language
A strong analysis explains how the writing works. It does more than say what happens or attach a device label to a quotation.
Self-check
What should follow a named technique in an analytical sentence?
Show the answer
An explanation of the effect the choice creates and how that effect contributes to meaning in context.
