What to know
- OCR A-level English Literature H472 rewards a sustained, informed response to literary writing. A line of argument should develop as the essay progresses: each paragraph adds a reason or complication rather than repeating the opening claim. Context is most useful when it changes or sharpens the reading of the text.
What to do in an assessment
- Answer the question in a concise opening claim, then build paragraphs around distinct stages of the argument. Analyse language, form and structure in the selected text and connect contextual knowledge where it illuminates meaning. Return to the question as the interpretation develops; avoid inserting background facts that do not support it.
In plain language
An essay is a connected explanation, not a set of separate observations. Each point should move your answer forward.
Self-check
How can context earn a place in a literary paragraph?
Show the answer
Show how it helps explain a textual choice or meaning relevant to the essay question.
