What to know
- Integers, decimals and fractions can be compared on the same number line. Moving right means a greater value; negative values lie left of zero, and the negative with the larger magnitude is smaller.
What to do in an assessment
- Convert fractions to decimals or a shared denominator when helpful, place the values in order, and use <, > or = with the smaller value on the left of <.
In plain language
The sign changes the order: −1.4 is less than −0.9 because it is further left, even though 1.4 is larger than 0.9. Fractions can be compared in the same way after conversion; for instance, −3/4 is −0.75. A short number line is often clearer than trying to compare negative digits in your head.
Self-check
Write −2/5 and −0.3 in increasing order.
Show the answer
−2/5 < −0.3, because −2/5 = −0.4.
