    What to know

    • Eduqas C700QS separates literary prose reading from non-fiction reading and writing. In the non-fiction component, unfamiliar texts require close attention to purpose, audience and context as well as to language. A striking word matters because of what it does in that particular text, not because it is unusual by itself.

What to do in an assessment

    • Identify the writer’s purpose and intended reader, select a small detail, and explain how its wording or placement supports that purpose. When comparing texts, use a shared point of comparison and explain a difference in approach. Keep reading analysis separate from the transactional writing task that follows.

    In plain language

Ask why this writer chose this way of speaking to these readers. A useful answer explains the choice in its context, not just its effect in isolation.

    Self-check

Why should an analysis connect a language choice to audience or purpose?

    Show the answer

Because the choice gains meaning from what the writer is trying to achieve for those readers.
