Scope: Core · Topic 5, Waves in matter, point (a): wave speed = frequency × wavelength; period = 1/frequency
Open revision guidance
What to know
- Describe wave motion using amplitude (maximum displacement), wavelength (length of one cycle), frequency (cycles per second) and period (time for one cycle).
- Apply v = fλ for wave speed and T = 1/f for period and frequency. Use compatible units: f in hertz, λ in metres, v in m s⁻¹ and T in seconds.
What to do in an assessment
- Identify the requested quantity, rearrange the correct relationship and check units. Convert wavelength to metres before using v = fλ.
In plain language
Amplitude describes the size of the oscillation; wavelength and period describe the cycle in distance and time. Frequency and wavelength together determine wave speed.
Self-check
A wave has frequency 200 Hz and wavelength 1.5 m. What are its speed and period?
Show the answer
v = 200 × 1.5 = 300 m s⁻¹; T = 1/200 = 0.0050 s.
