    Scope: Core · AS Chemistry, C1.3 Chemical calculations, point (i): ideal gas equation pV = nRT

    Open revision guidance

    What to know

    • For an ideal gas, pV = nRT. Use pressure in Pa, volume in m³, amount n in mol, temperature in K, and the gas constant R in matching SI units (8.31 J mol⁻¹ K⁻¹). Rearrange the equation for the unknown and convert units before substitution.

    What to do in an assessment

    • Convert °C to K by adding 273.15; convert kPa to Pa and dm³ to m³ if using SI values. Check that the rearranged answer’s units match the physical quantity.

    In plain language

    The ideal-gas equation links pressure, volume, amount and absolute temperature.

    Self-check

    Find the pressure of 0.100 mol gas at 298 K in 2.49 dm³. Use R = 8.31 J mol⁻¹ K⁻¹.

    Show the answer

    V = 2.49×10⁻³ m³. p = nRT/V = 0.100×8.31×298/(2.49×10⁻³) ≈ 9.95×10⁴ Pa = 99.5 kPa.
