    What to know

    • Pearson GCSE Literature questions invite a personal response supported by knowledge of the chosen set text. A defensible interpretation is more valuable than a plot summary: it explains how a moment contributes to a character, relationship or idea across the work and responds to the wording of the question.

What to do in an assessment

    • Start with a direct answer to the task. Select a brief textual reference, analyse one precise language, form or structure choice, and connect it to a wider moment or context where relevant. For a comparison, keep both texts active and make the basis of comparison explicit.

    In plain language

Know the story, but use that knowledge to prove an argument about the question. Don’t retell everything that happens before reaching your point.

    Self-check

What makes a textual reference useful in an essay?

    Show the answer

It supports a point that answers the question and gives a specific choice to analyse.
