    Scope: Core · 9702 §1.3 Errors and uncertainties, learning outcome 3: assess uncertainty in a derived quantity by simple addition of absolute or percentage uncertainties

    Open revision guidance

    What to know

    • For a derived quantity formed by adding or subtracting measurements, add their absolute uncertainties in the simple worst-case method. For a product or quotient, add percentage uncertainties. Convert a derived quantity’s percentage uncertainty to an absolute uncertainty by multiplying by its value.
    • State the result at precision consistent with the measurements.

    What to do in an assessment

    • For each input, calculate absolute uncertainty ÷ measured value × 100%. Add input percentages for a product, then convert to an absolute uncertainty. For a sum or difference, add the absolute uncertainties directly.

    In plain language

    When measured quantities are multiplied, their relative percentage uncertainties add in the simple method required here.

    Self-check

    A = 2.00 ± 0.01 cm and B = 3.00 ± 0.02 cm. Estimate area AB and its uncertainty.

    Show the answer

    Area=6.00 cm². Percentage uncertainty=(0.01/2.00×100)+(0.02/3.00×100)=0.50%+0.67%=1.17%, so absolute uncertainty≈6.00×0.0117=0.07 cm². Report about 6.00±0.07 cm².
