    What to know

    • On a number line, values increase from left to right. A negative value is less than zero, and the negative value with the greater magnitude is further left. Fractions and decimals can be compared once they are expressed on a common scale.

What to do in an assessment

    • Convert fractions to decimals or equivalent denominators when helpful, then compare every value on the same number line. Use <, > or = in the direction that matches the values.

    In plain language

Do not compare negative numbers by ignoring their signs: −1.2 is less than −0.75 because it is further left, even though 1.2 is larger than 0.75. The same idea works for decimals, fractions and integers. A quick sketch helps prevent the common mistake of treating the number closest to zero as the smallest negative number.

    Self-check

Put −1.2, −3/4 and 0.5 in increasing order.

    Show the answer

    −1.2 < −3/4 < 0.5, since −3/4 = −0.75.
