    What to know

    • AQA 7707 Component 1, Telling Stories, includes the Remembered Places study. Place can be represented through the narrator’s selection of sensory detail, viewpoint and temporal distance. A remembered location is not simply a neutral map: the telling may reveal what the speaker values, avoids or reinterprets.

What to do in an assessment

    • Track when the account describes a place directly and when it reflects on that place from another time. Analyse how a detail shapes viewpoint, then explain its effect on the reader’s understanding of the remembered experience. Connect the close reading to the relevant language-and-literature task, not to a generic description of setting.

    In plain language

A remembered place tells us about the person recalling it as well as about the location. Notice what has been selected and how the memory is framed.

    Self-check

What can temporal distance add to a description of place?

    Show the answer

It can expose a difference between the remembered experience and the narrator’s later understanding of it.
